If you are like most people, when you go to Netflix you spend more time flipping through the overwhelming amount of content than actually watching anything.
I’m here to school you on how to get the most out of your Netflix … i.e. stop flicking and start watching.
When in doubt, watch TV shows
TV shows are the best for binge watching. Find a show you’ve never scene and watch two, three, for our more seasons.
You know that long list of shows everyone talks about but you have no clue what’s going on? Go get caught up on Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Friends, Spartacus, Criminal Minds, MASH, The Following, Freaks and Geeks.
You no longer have to be the social outcast who doesn’t get pop culture references. All the shows you could ever want to watch and some you really don’t are ready at your fingertips.
Embrace the wealth of international entertainment
This is where I spend most of my time to be honest. I love watching what the world has to offer from amazing British TV (Sherlock, Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders, Skins, Dr. Who, Luther, The Fall, Being Human … this list goes on for days), Swedish gems like Dragon Tattoo Trilogy, to the most excellent foreign horror films.
The U.S. does a decent job at horror and continues to get better – we love our slashers – but the rest of the world is just killing it. (However, when it comes to horror TV … I may have to side with the states.)
Check out the great Italian directors like Argento and Bava. Spend some time watch Ju-on and Sadako. Discover something new like Ip Man, Ichi the Killer, Pontypool (O Canada), Let the Right One In (Swedish gem indeed) or Night Watch.
Get some culture, read some subtitles and kick back.
Check out what’s new
Each month Netflix is updating content. So see what’s coming out that you will want to watch.
In February alone they’ve added An American Haunting, Bulletproof, Hitch, King Arthur, Re-Animator, Showgirls (give love to cult classic), Mr. Peabody and Sherman, RoboCop and the release of season three of House of Cards.
This leads me into my next tip…
Watch original content
Netflix has seen quite a bit of success in original content. Orange is the New Black and House of Cards have really placed Netflix as a contender for best shows. Hemlock Grove and Marco Polo are also seeing success.
They have some new shows in the pipeline like Bloodline and Daredevil. This is not a place for old content. It’s a thriving “network” for new content.
Also, they can rescue your favorite shows and save them from extinction – Arrested Development, The Killing, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
There are some great standup comedies to watch as well. And in addition to all the Marvel shows they will be rolling out, we will see some Adam Sandler and Duplass Brother films as well.
So the next time you login to Netflix, remember my four simple tips. No more searching for 20 minutes to decide on what to watch. Pick a tip, roll with it and enjoy.
