This week, I take a look at the sequel to comic noir classic Sin City, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. This movie is long overdue. The original film came out almost 10 years ago! A lifetime ago for most fans and it is going to turn out not so good for those of you who were avid fans of the first one. Not that it isn’t good…well maybe it’s not that good, but more that it’s been so long since the first one, no one’s really going to care to shell out full price to see this one. All the principal actors have returned: Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson etc. Add in Josh Brolin, and Dennis Haysbert, who is replacing the late Michael Clarke Duncan, along with Jamie Chung who is replacing Devon Aoki as Miho and you’ve got your cast.
The movie centers around 5 different short stories. The title story actually takes place years before the original plot in Sin City, and the sexy (and summarily banned poster siren) Eva Green plays the scheming Ava Lord. Ava Lord manipulates her ex Dwight (Josh Brolin, originally played by Clive Owen) into a plot to kill her business mogul husband. Along the way Marv (Rourke) gets involved and so do the prostitues led by Gail (Dawson). Overall, while this was going on in the theatre, I couldn’t shake my unease over how long and disjointed a lot of this seemed. The 9 year gap between films has totally killed the momentum this film had. Even when you get to the story involving Nancy (Alba) and the ghost of Hartigan (Willis), I found it hard to care really. The style and cinematography were still good, but you cant shake feeling like you’ve seen this film before over the past 9 years. It’s just hasn’t been worth the wait.
